Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) First Look

by Dan Kregor on Dec.18, 2007, under First Look, Software, Technology

Today we had a couple of guys from Microsoft come in to implement a Proof-of-Concept for their “new” monitoring and management product System Center Operations Manager.

To be honest, there really isn’t a great deal I can tell you at present. The installation was as smooth as it comes. Straight forward and went off without a hitch (although a selection of (possibly not) random servers where automatically detected).

I was disappointed to note that MS have not include functionality to schedule a server for maintenance mode. Guess I’ll just have to recreate the Alert Suppression website I developed while at ASG Group.

One concern I do have is that of the 10 servers participating in the PoC, we experienced (unrelated) issues with one and there was no evidence of it in SCOM (the server was rebooted but there was no register of a heartbeat lose etc.)

For now we wait and see what MS have to say tomorrow.
